                     MY  IDEAL UNIVERSITY


      
 An ıdeal unıversity must prepare  its students not only for academic skills but also for their life  after university. A graduate of an ideal university must be both successful  in his/her academic life and be active in social life. How the university will manage to do it?
 
       To begin with, a university must be a place that provides a good education at a very high level for its students.A good education must respond to the people’s needs. If a student, after years of study, is not able or not willing to shoulder any social responsibilities, not prepared to work for the public interest, and not ready to serve the country and the advancement and development of the human race, then a university education for that student will be quite useless and a waste of time. Morever, an ideal university must be able to produce graduates with good characters such as being ready to take on responsibilities, kind, willing to help others etc..

       Secondly,the university must be a place where the students can speak freely their mind, think, investigate,explore, innovate and invent.A college student must be educated in such a way that he /she is prepared to be an open minded person.

        Lastly, at the same time, it must be a place that culture, heritage are preserved and developed. A student of an ideal university must also pay attention to things like socialization, extracurricular activities, clubs, sporting events and so on.

        METU
goes with my ideal university. It certainly offers a good education, socialise its students and prepares for life.

                                    BEING A MEMBER OF METU

    When I first heard that I had been accepted to Middle East Technical University, I was disappointed because I did not like Ankara.However, I have  changed my mind over time, because Middle East Technical Unıversity is really different.

    Actually, it has been only one month since I came here, but I got used to this environment. First of all,
people from age to young respect to each other here.Morever, there are a lot of oppurtunities offered by Middle East Technical University.For example, there are a lot of sport activities, lots of social clubs,tennis,rowing so on. That is, there is no time to be bored.

   I have lots of time to do something for myself. Middle East Technical Unıversity offers a lot of courses. I benefit from these courses
.I am a member of a social club :THBT.Also, I am interested in sport. For example, I am interested in playing volleyball and I have the oppurtunity to go to stadium and play volleyball whenever I want. I also have interest in folklore. I participated in Turkısh Folklore Communıty in METU. I go to classes in Turkısh Folklore Community at wednesdays and saturdays.

    There is not any serious problem about being a member of  METU. In winter, I will have difficulty  in adapting into hard weather conditions. Since I come from Aydın, I am not used to such weather. I will get used to it soon. Whatever happens, I love METU.

   In this video, there are some tips for you to reduce your exam stress.I found it useful, because at least one year in our life we experienced exam stress.I wish I had encountered this video last year while I was not able to cope with my stress.Anyway, I am informed now and I can tell it other people having exam stress.


   Here are some advices mentioned in the video :


  -Slow down and become intentional about your physical
  movements, this can increase your sense of self-mastery and
  control

- Use relaxation and visualization methods (ie. controlled
  breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, visualizing peak
  performance)

- Stretch, stand up or walk around to relax tight muscles
Calming Distractions  - Focus on an inanimate, calming object (ie. Wall, floor, pen)

- Perform a calming action (ie. Rubbing a stone)

- Use a mantra (ie. Silently, slowly repeat a calming word/phrase

- Use affirmative self-talk (ie. Relax, concentrate, it’s okay)

- Create a mild, harmless pain that can override over other

  thoughts and impulses (ie. Pressing fingernails into palm)

- Have a drink of water or a snack

- Wear, touch or look at something with positive associations;
  this can trigger a calming response (ie. Photo, special stone)

                          BUTTERFLIES   IN   STOMACH    


                   
   I  chose  this  topic  on  purpose,  because  most  of  my classmates and me were under this stress last year.Fortunately, we got over it, but this stress will last as long as we live.We will encounter lots of exams, we will get stressed and if we know how to handle this stress, we will get over them.

    Anxiety is a normal reaction – apprehension, tension, or uneasiness – to any perception threat or anticipation of danger. Exam anxiety may be a result of our underestimating our abilities. Conversely, it may be a natural reaction to insufficient exam preparation.





    Exam anxiety can result in: sweaty palms, feeling too hot or cold,headaches, upset stomach, nausea , rapid heart beat, shallow/irregular breathing, dizziness, angry, depressed or unsure,poor present performance.





     If the anxiety is severe, persistent, or  generalized beyond exam situations, you may benefit from seeing a physician or counsellor.  Yet, we can handle the situation ourselves as well.Here is some advice for you :
*   Listen to relaxing music
*   Practice good nutrition and maintain regular exercise
*   Create a balanced schedule that includes some breaks,
exercise  and social activity
*   Sleep well
*   Set realistic study goals.

  Lastly, students, parents, teachers and school administors must  all find  ways to be actively involved in reducing anxiety.
By doing so, we can save our student’s future life and help them being a good member of society.

While I was surfing on the internet, I came across this song. I was impressed by both the lyrics of it and the words which its composer uttered.

     ‘Child labor is denial of childhood.Why ? In the lives of our typical families with stable jobs and adequate incomes, our families go to work each day and children go to school and play with  their friends in their free time.However, this kind of family doesn’t apply for 218 million children in the world, because they are  trapped in under harsh,dangerous and exploitative  conditions of child labor. ‘

     After I had listened this song, I thought that we lived our childhood, got whatever we wanted,  educated well, dressed properly, played with our friends. What about the others ?

     I think that they are totally innocent. Vulnerable children are open to exploitation that knows no limit.They never deserve these things.

     However, change is on its way.This reality may be bothersome but improvements have been made.With enough time,effort and will to succeed, these children can look  forward to a brighter future.We all have responsibilities fort his situation. We can also support the works of ILO ( International Labor  Organization) or another ones ‘.I think Turkish people are sensible enough to take a hand in this issue.

                 GLOBAL CHİLD LABOR PROBLEM

         What Do We Know And What Can We Do ?


    The problem of child labor has moved from a matter of regional and national concern to one of international debate. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has estimated that 250 million children between the ages five and  fourteen work in developing countries.Many of these children are forced to work.They are denied an education and childhood.Some are confined and beaten.Some are denied the right  to leave the workplace and go home to their families.
    
    What interventions might end child labor without hurting children? What  can we do to stop child labor? I think that there must be a public disclosure against  this serious issue.







     We should try to shift our spending patterns from problematic companies to responsible ones. We can check out the Resposible Shopping page to find out more about this.

    We can ask retail stores if their products were produced without child labor.I think that this could be a bit diffucult to ask each store.Instead of doing this, we can search for the companies which works with children.

    We can join actions or we can support the projects such as ILO,UNICEF.I chose this topic , because I want to raise awareness in society and in the world later. I hope you are more informed about this matter now.

     Here is a video about countless benefits of exercise.It includes some useful and easy tips for you J I chose this video on purpose, because it encouraged me a bit for sport. I  hope that this video will encourage every one from young to old to be just a little bit more active !


     Let me talk about a bit benefits of exercise.There are many physical benefits to doing regular exercise.It will improve your body shape, muscle tone and flexibility.It strenghtens your bones,reduces the chance of ilness and increases your life expectancy.It will also increases your strenght,  endurance,flexibility and overall fitness levels.


     There are also mental benefits of exercise. Exercise can give you an aim or goal, something to strive for.It can be enjoyable helping to reduce stres and tension levels. Exercise can help you to feel better about your self-confidence.


     Finally, there are also social benefits of exercise.It can improve your team work and  co-operation skills.And it can help you meet new people which could lead to new friendships.


     As you can see, there are many benefits of exercise.There are also many ways to exercise.It could be anything from walking to school to joining a local sport team. Don’t hesitate to take a step and start exercising J

                                    REGULAR EXERCISE
     Some do it with musıc, some while watching television; some do in their own home, while some others in gyms.For some, they do it in the morning, others at night.No matter where and when, many people all over the world do it and that is EXERCISE.However,unfourtanely, in the rush of modern life, some fail to make room in their lives for exercising.Yet, this healthy habit offers such great benefits that it must be an important part of our daily life.The most significant effects of regular exercise are on cardiovascular and pulmonary functions, skeletal fitness and emotional fitness.



               
     Probably, the most well known effect of exercise is its benefits to our heart.When a person exercises long and hard enough, the heart pumps faster and blood is circulated well throughout the body.Since the heart is muscle, exercise serves to strengthen it.As the heart becomes stronger, a person's stamina and energy level improves.The same is true fort he lungs.A person can get such results within a few weeks just by walking briskly for 30 minutes three or four times a week.

    Another physical benefit of regular exercise is skeletal fitness.It takes longer to achieve, but it is worth the effect, especially for women.Exercise can help prevent osteoporosis,bone degeneration. It is a gradual process of loss of bone that occurs as people age.Yet, it can be halted by regular  exercise.Exercise actually  helps increase bone mass and it is said to be the best preventive measure to take in this case.




     Just like exercise’s such benefits, it also improves people’s emotional fitness.It reduces stress.Aeroic exercise can make  a person more capable of stress because he is less tense.When exercising, blood circulation improves and people burn off the adrenalin which stres causes the body to produce. In addition to helping people cope with stres, exercise can also help to alleviate depression.

     In conclusion,  a regular aerobic exercise not only helps one’s most vital systems function properly, but also helps maintain emotional balance.Apart from these, it doesn’t require that much time and effort to become a healthier person.Instead of watching television so much or surfing internet, people would be better of cycling or walking in order to lead a healthier life.

Turkish Pizza : Lahmacun


You see a picture that you are accustomed to before like Pizza,but with a diffirence:with the Turkish Lahmacun :) 
You may have heard its name, tasted it or neither of them. However, if you taste it once, it is impossible not to like it.
We asked one hundred people to taste lahmacun and ninety nine of them said they liked. Of course this is not the case,cause there was no such poll;but we believe in our palate as the Turkish and decided to introduce it to people all around the world.

What kind of a food is Lahmacun? 
First of all, it is a Turkish cuisine and specific to Gaziantep.Let's think about a dough on which several types of species, meat, parsley, onion , garlic. With its charming apperance it meets the needs as a appetite, as well. Lahmacun is often served sprinkled with a piece of  lemon and wrapped around vegetables, including pickles, tomatoes, lettuce,which is an important factor that makes us consume more. We know you lick your chop,so all you must do is just go to a nearest Turkish restaurant and order a lahmacun or start to make it on your own.

These are “fındık lahmacun” and they are specific to Mersin,Adana regions. They are called “fındık” because they are as small as nut :) You can eat one of them at once :) You can find them only Adana,Mersin regions and buy 8 of them only 2€ :) 



There are “Antep Lahmacun” and they are bigger than “fındık lahmacun”. They are diffirent from other kinds of Lahmacun because they are hot. You can buy one of them for  less than 1€ :)




How to make a Lahmacun?
First of all, you could make lahmacun with tortilla -which is more practical- or you can make your own dough which is more delicious :) :)
We will give the recipe for the dough.

Ingredients:
  • 1 kg of ground beef
  • 1 kg onion
  • 2 medium size of tomatoes
  • 1 bunch of parsley
  • 2 green pepper
  • Tomato paste
  • Red pepper paste
  • Black pepper
  • Salt
For the dough:
  •  4 cups flour
  •  Salt
  • 1/2 cups of warm water
  • Yeast
Wash and drain tomatoes, onion and parsley.
Take onion and green pepper to bowl and process the food processor until ingredients are finely chopped .
Take them into a big bowl.
Put tomatoes to the food processor and then take the tomatoes to the mixing bowl too. 
Chop parsley and take it to the mixing bowl.
Add meat, tomato paste, pepper paste, black pepper, and salt to the mixing bowl and knead them until they are combined.
Heat the oven to 250C.
For making your own dough, mix flour, salt, and yeast in a bowl and add warm water slowly.
Cover with plastic wrap and wait to rise for 1 hour and knead it again.
Take a small part of dough (like a lemon) and roll it as large as tortilla.
Then add the mixing to the dough.              
You can serve lahmacun with ayran and onion salad.

When Nimrod collected all firewood in Urfa in order to build a monumental execution pyre, wife of a hunter had to prepare venison raw in the absence of firewood. She mixed the meat with bulgur, herbs and spices and crushed the mixture with stone implements until it was palatable.

                              

     It is easy to make çiğköfte you don’t need even fire to cook it !!  Just buy some species like red pepper, a bowel of bulghur, meat and vegetables then let’s bring them together and rub !! Coming Turkey and not tasting the çiğköfte means half of your travel is meaningless !! İt is made not only by rubbing it but also by adding our affection to the species’s and meat’s extraordinary dance !! I, personally, strongly advise all of you to taste this wanderfull and really delicious food. You would never regret !
