A DEVICE TO PROMOTE LEARNING ENGLISH

A DEVICE TO PROMOTE LEARNING ENGLISH You need to work in twos or in groups of 3 or 4. You will imagine you are a new publisher in the Turkish marketing sector. You need to create a name for your firm. You need to design a device to promote learning English for Turkish learners. While designing your device, you need to consider the following points: the age of potential users, the features of the device (what kind of services it can provide for users), the price of the device, the name of the device, the size of the device, the advantages of the device, the points to consider in order to use the device effectively. You also give a name for your product. You also need to specify how potential customers can buy the product. You are expected to use the coordinating and correlative conjunctions, and a variety of sentence types (simple, compound, and compound complex sentences in your writing). You also need to produce a poster of your device. You can either prepare it on the computer or by hand. If you prepare it by hand, you need to have your final product scanned in a jpg format and upload the jpg file to our class blog. (http://fle133contextgram2012blog.blogspot.com/). If you like, instead of preparing a poster of your device, you can create a 4-5 minute video clip of your device, advertising your product (you can draw a picture of your product by hand and tell your prospective customers about it). ( I would appreciate if all members of the group needs to talk in the video) You need to upload your video clip to our class blog. Please remember to write the names of all group members to your post Deadline: December 3, 2012 Length: 300-400 words

TV Series (Breaking Bad)

BREAKING BAD
When I think about real family drama with lots of actions, emotions, catharsis, the first TV series coming to my mind is Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad is an award winning TV series, and it has been broadcasted for 5 seasons. Firstly, this TV series is a combination of a World of crime and a family environment. The head character is a chemistry teacher at a school, he has a wife and a teenage child whose legs are not working properly. After a while, while he is working at car washer for extra money for his family, he goes to doctor, and he learns that he has got a phase 3 lung cancer. Chance to survive from this disease is almost does not exist. So, Walter, the head character, decides to go into some evil bussiness to leave a legacy for his family. He makes the purest methanphetamine, very strong and popular stimulating drug lately, in the World, and markets it to some drug dealers in order to gain money. Things develop after this. Walter’s brother in law, Hank is a DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) agent, which is a very dramatic irony. Walter goes into very bad things, and later he learns that he survives from lung cancer. In order to protect his family, save his life, get more money, he tries to be a baron, and takes the name Heisenberg. This Tv series has a deep construct, strong feelings, a little bit fun. I’m still enjoying while watching it, I strongly recommend you to watch the whole series.

GREEN DAY

                                                                          GREEN DAY BAND

Green Day is a punk rock band founded in 1987. Their albums have sold 23 millions in USA, and 70 millions all over the World, and that’s why they have got the most successful punk group ever. Green Day have won 4 grammy awards. The head and vocalist of this group is Joe Billy Armstrong. And he is also writing and composing the tracks. The very first name of this band was Sweet Children. There were 2 people in this band these times. Billie was 10 when he found the band. He later wrote his first song “Why do you want him?” at 14 for the sake of his real mother and father-in law. In 1987, John Kiffmeyer (Al Sobrante) joined the band, after that the name of band was changed to Green Day. After this action, the band has bounced to top of punk rock. They have released lots of successful albums, tracks, solos etc. While they were making music, they didn’t refrain from criticizing goverment, life styles, rules, etc. They are known for having criticized the former USA president George W. Bush for radical conservative actions. They even got reaction from it. I like this band not only because their music is good, I like them also they have an aim and their music has a meaning for it. Tracks are trying to give some message especially for Americans, but music is an universal notion. They are inspiring young generation to be more free. So, these factors make Green Day one of the most respectful and qulified punk ruck bands all over the World.

Comment On "I Brain ODTU" #4

COMMENT ON THE SLOGAN “I BRAIN ODTÜ”
I brain Odtu, I think, is a very successful advertisement strategy for making the university’s name. Being one of the best universities all over the world, METU (ODTU) has chosen a good presentation model. Brain is the center of everything in human life. In METU, brain is also used very much. They may try to say that we are thinking and moving logically, we are educating our students as hardworking, successful individuals, we are, indeed, shaping their brains. It has already affected people within or without METU. There are people wearing t-shirts, sweat shirts in METU. I actually find this slogan very successful. If I were a designer, I would make METU look like a real attractive living space for students. I would use more visual advertisement method. For example, I may use a mountain on which there are lots of trees. All trees except for one red tree are located on foothill, which symbolizes other universities. The red one is located on top of the mountain, and it symbolizes METU as leading university. So, I would put a sentence curved above mountain as “Shed from Clichés”.  It seems a little bit utopic, but it’s my design anyway. Maybe, the opportunities of METU can be written on the leafs of the tree.

An Ideal University

                                              AN IDEAL UNIVERSITY
University is a brand new life for every student. In it, students are educated through their professions, and earned some vital skills. In order to give such knowledge and skills, University should be well supported, have efficient utility. Firstly, as university is a place for learning, it should have an effective educational curriculum. It should aim to gain students basic skills for their departments. After that, students should be integrated into education, and be provided to communicate with other students and tutors for maximum acquisition. Secondly, environment is one of the most important things in an ideal university life. Campus life is much better and much more useful than creepy concrete structures. Students should get into this environment. When they get into there, they feel more relaxed, unashamed. Thirdly, technological advances are a determining factor in an ideal university. Today’s world is depending on internet much more than before. Everything is mechanized. Computer science is everywhere. Thus, university should keep up with these technological advances, and implement on itself. It should provide students everything they need. It should provide cheap meal, cheap and qualified technological services (best quality network connection, saving time technologies, etc.), and even scholarships to give its education students well. In short term, an ideal university should be constructed via thinking best for students.

Judy Garland's Wizard of Oz dress fetches $480,000 A dress worn by Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz has sold for $480,000 (£302,000) at auction in Beverly Hills. The price for the blue and white gingham pinafore dress was in line with expectations, Julien's Auctions said. A similar dress worn during tests for the classic 1939 film fetched $910,000 (£572,500) in 2011, Reuters reports. Auctioneer Darren Julien said the difference in price was due to the fact that fewer versions of the test dress were made. Neither dress fetched anywhere near the $4.6m (£2.8m) spent last year on Marilyn Monroe's white "subway dress" from the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch, and the $3.7m (£2.3m) taken for Audrey Hepburn's Ascot dress from My Fair Lady. The Wizard of Oz dress was made by the famous MGM costume designer Adrian Greenberg, who was commonly known simply as Adrian. The buyer has not been identified. However, Judy Garland's dress was not the only highlight of the two-day Hollywood Icons auction. A green floral dress worn by Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music fetched $38,400 (£24,150); a racing jacket belonging to Steve McQueen sold for $50,000 (£31,500) and a purple wool skirt worn by Marilyn Monroe during the making of the 1954 film River of No Return went for the same amount. Meanwhile, $1,375 (£865) was paid each for a slice of wedding cake from both Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding and the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
